Bedroom Community

About Us

Bedroom Community is an Icelandic record label/collective formed in 2006 by Valgeir Sigurðsson, with Nico Muhly and Ben Frost.

Like-minded, yet diverse individuals from different corners of the globe who all creatively orbit around an inconspicuous building and its inhabitants on the outskirts of Reykjavik Iceland- Greenhouse Studios where the music is mostly created.

Bedroom Community (the story according to the press*)

While Nico Muhly has been getting noticed for his work for a while, this first collection [Speaks Volumes], as eclectic and disparate as it is, is certain to raise his profile and put the fledgling Bedroom Community imprint on the map.

"Theory Of Machines, written by Australian Ben Frost, is the second release from the Bedroom Community label. In a word Theory Of Machines is the most striking record that I have heard this year". "Magnificent".

"Aching beauty in every minute. That’s the five word description that springs to mind for Ekvílibríum, the debut album of Valgeir Sigurðsson, perhaps not the easiest to remember name, but certainly one of the most well known for being a stellar producer to various artists. In the midst of all this production work, he started the Bedroom Community label, which shot to the top of everyone’s minds earlier this year with the outrageously fantastic Theory of Machines by Ben Frost."

"In just over a year, Icelandic imprint Bedroom Community have distilled some of the most interesting records around, first with Nico Muhly’s delicate Speaks Volumes, then with Ben Frost’s texturalTheory Of Machines, and, more recently with Valgeir Sigurðsson’s own stellar Ekvílibríum."

"With All Is Well, Sam Amidon has crafted a precious gem of a record, all in nuances and shades, with delicate overtones and airy harmonies. The Bedroom Community family is growing, but the standards are as high as ever."

"The trio of artists responsible for the record-- Amidon, Muhly, and Icelandic producer Valgeir Sigurðsson (All Is Well was recorded at Sigurðsson's Greenhouse Studios in Reykjavik and released on his Bedroom Community label)-- create a very specific space with these arrangements, which goes beyond simply setting mood and atmosphere."

"In an era of overheated Nick Drake comparisons, Amidon is eerily close to the real thing, singing in a fragile but certain tenor against the deep breath and soft sweep of Nico Muhly’s orchestrations."

"Bedroom Community has a history of releasing particularly off-kilter juxtapositions of sound. I’ve written at length about the Valgeir Sigurðsson and Ben Frost, two titanically impressive bolts of creativity. Muhly’s second album, Mothertongue appears to be the third part of that album trilogy to me, a strong statement for this fairly new record label."

"Muhly’s abundance of talent lights up the sky like fireworks from the start of his second album for the sparky Bedroom Community label."

Demo Policy

We are generally not looking for demo submissions, due to the simple fact that we already have a roster that needs all our attention and energy.

Keeping this in mind, you are welcome to send demos to us, just remember that Bedroom Community is a collective of a close-knit group of individuals and as such we have enough music that we need to put out already. But we try to give everything we receive a listen because we respect your effort in sending us your music, and well... you never know. However, we cannot promise a response, but rest assured that If we like something enough to release it you will hear back from us. In the meantime, here are some helpful tips to keep in mind when sending your music: We prefer demos on CDs, put the name of the project and your contact info directly on the demo so we know how to find you if we need to. You can also email us a link to a website containing MP3 files, but please don't send emails with attachments. Choose only 2-4 'key tracks', it's not necessary to send a full album to begin with. Compile what you feel best represents what you're doing and send that. If you send a full length record or a long compilation, it's helpful to highlight a couple tracks for suggested listening.

We hope you are interested in Bedroom Community as a label in itself, not just a random label that might release your own music. So buy our releases and listen to what we do, take some time and read about our label and the artists behind it, just like you'd hope that others would do if you were on the label. Don't waste your time nor ours on sending us music that obviously has no aesthetic relationship to what we do here.
